How to thrive in the age of AI

Hint: it's got nothing to do with AI.

Like the internet before it, artificial intelligence is going to change the way we work entirely.

And it’s important to keep up. There’s tremendous upside if you do... and massive downside if you don’t.

Part of why I’m writing with this urgency is because ChatGPT just launched their new “Tasks” feature.

I’ll dive into this in more detail next week, but here’s the short version: you can now ask ChatGPT to do things for you in the future. Things like setting a daily motivational quote, scheduling deadline reminders, or having it check in on your monthly and yearly goals.

“Tasks” is a big deal because it’s a precursor to something much larger—something you’ll be seeing a lot more of very soon: AI agents.

AI agents are like personal assistants that don’t just give you ideas—they go out into the world and do things for you. They’ll order your groceries. Invest your money. Send flowers to your significant other. Call customer service on your behalf. Optimize your social media profiles. Build apps for your specific needs. Even help you run your business.

And, yes, in some cases... they’ll do your job.

This is an incredible time to be alive if you’re a builder. But if you’ve been coasting in an easy job that requires little creativity or judgment, the risk is real: that job might get automated away.

So, what can you do?

How to thrive in the age of AI.

The answer is both simple and complicated:

You must find a way to infuse yourself into your work.

Your work needs personality. A point of view. A style that’s uniquely you.

Whether you’re building an app, writing a song, drafting a novel, creating a blog post, finishing a screenplay, making a TikTok video, or even handing over an assignment to your boss—you need to give the user an experience they can’t get from anyone else.

When AI can build anything, people don’t choose what to use based on functionality alone. They choose based on vibes and values.

Take me, for example. I write comedy. My sense of humor is my edge - it’s what protects me from being automated away by AI. Sure, AI can be funny, but it can’t be funny like me.

I think specific things are funny. And the goal of my work is always to reflect what I think is funny. When I put it out into the world, it finds the people who also find it funny.

I don’t need to be funny for everyone - that’s not realistic. I just need to make myself laugh. Then, the people with a similar sensibility will find me.

How do you infuse yourself into your work?

If you’re writing a blog about productivity, don’t just share tips—tell stories from your life. Show your wins and failures. Weave your personality into every post.

If you’re building an app for creators, make the onboarding experience fun, intuitive, and reflective of your sense of humor or style.

If you’re writing a novel, focus on themes, emotions, and character quirks that only you can write. What’s your unique perspective on love, fear, or ambition?

If you’re making TikTok videos, let your personality shine through how you explain things, the way you edit, or even the music you choose.

In a world where AI can automate everything, your perspective, your style, and your vibe are what make you irreplaceable.

That’s how you thrive in the age of AI.

You use AI to become more you. To ship things that come from your guts and your heart. To create work so personal and unique that AI can’t replicate it.

Start now. Because things are changing fast.
